Jenny Birchall
Print Painting
To mark the 2021 G7 Summit, being held in Carbis Bay and St Ives from 11th to 13th June, much loved St Ives artist Jenny Birchall has created two original paintings in celebration of this historic event. Jenny has lived and worked in West Cornwall for nearly 40 years, and her richly comic artworks are inspired by the diverse selection of people who are brought together when they come to Cornwall on holiday.
Jenny Birchall | G7 Comes to St Ives ~
“People who wouldn’t normally come within 100 yards of one another in their day to day lives are suddenly half naked and within feet of each other on a beach” says Jenny, “and having such an internationally diverse and high-profile collection of characters here for the G7 Summit was just too great an opportunity for my paintbrush to miss. These two works mark such an important moment in Cornwall’s history, and I hope they bring some fun and something of our unique British eccentricity this great event.”
The G7 summit in St Ives will be the first meeting of world leaders since the start of the pandemic, and is being attended by the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and America, making it Joe Biden's first visit to the UK as President of the United States. The leaders of Australia, India and South Korea will also be in attendance.
Look closely at Jenny Birchall’s exceptional artworks to see G7 Presidents Joe Biden, Justin Trudeau and Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Prime Ministers Mario Draghi, Yoshihide Suga and Boris Johnson sharing ice creams and cavorting in the sea modeling swimwear in the colours of the respective countries. Holidaying alongside them on the sands of Carbis Bay and St Ives harbour are other world leaders past and present, including Barack and Michelle Obama sunbathing and surfing, Nelson Mandela enjoying a great British cuppa and building sandcastles with the Dalai Lama, President Putin displaying his manly physique, Kim Jong-il showing off his sporting prowess, President Trump serving cocktails, and Gandhi keeping a watchful eye on all the fun as the scene’s nominated surf lifesaver.
Jenny Birchall’s paintings will be on show at St Ives’ New Craftsman Gallery throughout the summer, and both are available as giclee print posters, available exclusively at the gallery from 4th June. The gallery will also be taking commissions for similar Jenny Birchall artworks throughout this year, which could include you, your family, and anyone else you’d like to hang out with from throughout history.

Jenny Birchall’s witty paintings on wood reflect the comedy and incongruity of people brought together in Cornwall during the holiday seasons. Over time, her works have famously become populated by rock stars, gay icons, film stars and artists, and if you look closely you might find all the Doctor Whos hanging out together, or Grayson Perry playing beach tennis with Van Gogh.
Jenny welcomes personalised commissions where your own friends and family will make an appearance alongside the celebrities portrayed in her paintings.
