John Ward’s pots are handbuilt in coils, before being altered at the leather-hard stage by being cut and rejoined. They are influenced by the bold, simple forms of ancient pre-glaze pottery from China and Egypt, the simple abstract linear decoration of early Cypriot pottery and early Persian bowls, the formal strength of work by Hans Coper, the playfulness of work by Ian Godfrey and the light and colour and Lucy Rie.
John Ward was born in London in 1938. He studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts in London in 1966. In 1979 he moved to Pembrokeshire, Wales where he now lives and makes pots full-time.
