Matt Wilde
Painting
Painter Matt Wilde draws inspiration from urban environments and the vibrancy of the towns and cities, concerned primarily with capturing the ‘immediacy’ of those surroundings that people become immersed in. His technique of applying the paint quickly to the canvas in a sketch-like manner lends itself to the fast-paced lifestyles of today’s society and there is humour and wit in the scenes, as well as moments of human isolation in the chaos of busy town life.
Matt Wilde graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with a Fine Art degree in 1998, and has held solo exhibitions in Liverpool, Manchester and London.
With only one week in the year spent in St Ives if I’m lucky, that week gives me a sense of freedom and happiness. I can breathe easily, take in my surroundings, visit the galleries and make the most of every minute I am there. As I started work on my recent collection, the world and life changed for us all. I found myself immersed in this work more than I had imagined, perhaps as a way of escapism, to remain positive, and feel as though I was still connected with the place I miss the most.
