When Richard Ayling came to settle in Penwith there was a period when landscape and seascape were the most important subject matter. He painted on location irrespective of weather conditions to obtain immediacy and freshness in a work, and the figure is often included to give human contact and scale. Sky, in partivular, is an important element in his work, in its creation of atmosphere and perspective qualities.
Richard Ayling was born in Middlesex in 1950, but came to St Ives to paint in 1977. He later moved to work in one of the Penwith Gallery studios. He has exhibited at the Wills Lane Gallery, St Ives, the Penwith Gallery and at NAG in Cornwal, and at Camden Arts Centre, and Beaux Arts in Bath.
