Matthew Lanyon | No Holds Barred : Life & Art
In this the first curated exhibition of Matthew Lanyon’s work since 2018, we celebrate an artist for whom the distinction between art and life were irrelevant. Matthew created art to express his own feelings about and experiences of places, people and living creatures. His paintings resemble maps, or trails through time and space, with all the suns rising and setting around the edges, celebrating integrity and the sacred, whether in peak joy or anticipation of loss.
Matthew Lanyon (1951 - 2016) is one of Cornwall's most important artists, and this exhibition continues New Craftsman Gallery’s longstanding association with Matthew and his work. His paintings, tapestries, screen prints and assemblages employ an exclusive visual language which explores abstraction in the context of the history and landscape of West Cornwall, where he was born and raised.
A full length documentary of the film No Holds Barred: The Life & Art of Matthew Lanyon which draws on interviews with art critics, friends, other artists, Matthew’s siblings and son has been produced and has been screened nationwide.
